The LPM team alongside a collection of your peers available to provide mutual support. Each individual with their own experience and area's of expertise. You'll never feel alone again.
Early Access to LPM / Consulting / Training roles
The LPM team will actively seek roles across England even whilst you are on assignment. Break the "feast and famine" cycle that LPMs often suffer when they come to the end of a roSub-Headlinele. You will have first refusal of all roles.
Even this was just about manageable until it started to creep into your evenings, weekends and now your dreams (nightmares). Even if you aren't actually sat at the laptop you are thinking about work.
We know this because we have been there and that is why we founded LPM. Our mission to enable, and inspire, you on your journey to a portfolio career.
So what exactly does a portfolio career for a Practice Manager look like?
The short answer is anything you want, provided you love it.
We will help you to remember what it is you love about Primary Care and structure your work around this.
Initially you might continue in your Practice Manager role, 1 day a week offering support to another practice as a Locum Practice Manager.
Alternatively you might discover that you love training, facilitation, practice visits that you can deliver on behalf of existing providers.
As your confidence grows you might offer your own specialist service to several practices as a Primary Care Consultant. Think HR, Finance or Governance. You can offer this solo or start to grow your own team.
The possibilities are truly endless.
How much can a Practice Manager with a portfolio carer expect to earn?
Remember money isn't the aim of the game here, doing work that you love is. Having said that, this gig happens to pay quite well!
You'll get paid based on the value your client feels you can offer them. Typical rates are as follows:
Locum Practice Manager - Short Term Cover £350 per day
Locum Practice Manager - Medium Term Cover £300 per day
Trainer for established provider - £400 per day
Facilitator for established provider - £500 per day
Primary Care Consulting is where things start to get interesting. Provided you can justify the cost through the value you deliver you can name your price.
One member who offers a very specific service to practices is able to charge an average of £900 per day.
What qualifications do I need to start?
None! There are no formal qualifications required to start your portfolio careers. What you will need is your own business, this might be sole trader or a limited company. Don't worry we cover all of this in our membership.
What you'll need to do is document and evidence your experience and present yourself with confidence. Again we can help you with this.
Is this really for me / am I good enough?
Did you get a little bit scared back there when I said "present yourself with confidence"?
You are not alone, "imposter syndrome" seems to have an unusually high prevalence in Practice Managers.
It is something that your LPM team have had to deal with and they have developed learning materials to support you with this.
If you have survived more than a year as a Practice Manager you can do anything!

Director of Opportunities
I am a seasoned Primary Care Business/Practice Manager with
over a decade of experience in the GP healthcare sector. Having dedicated ten
years to collaborating with GP practices, predominantly in the South West and
more recently in central London, I bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise.
Throughout my career, I have adeptly navigated the
intricacies of practice management, offering comprehensive support to GP
partnerships and practices. From overseeing day-to-day operations to
spearheading strategic growth initiatives and facilitating business mergers, I
have played a pivotal role in the success of a range of healthcare
organisations, ranging from small-scale to large multi-site practices.
My specific areas of interests are Human Resources, Finance,
and operational efficiency. I derive immense satisfaction from coaching and
mentoring new to practice, practice managers in their professional development
and ensuring they have the skills necessary to succeed. Moreover, I am deeply
committed to fostering a culture of continuous improvement and regulatory
compliance, particularly in areas such as CQC Compliance and staff training.
Currently, I work as a Interim Primary Care Practice Manager
Consultant alongside working at LPM to extend support to practices and locum
Practice Managers across the London Area. In my capacity as the Director of
Opportunities at LPM, I am entrusted with overseeing opportunities spanning
across England and Wales, working to identify and support growth prospects for
our network of locum healthcare professionals.
My approach is rooted in a profound understanding of the
evolving healthcare landscape coupled with a relentless drive to deliver
excellence patient care. Whether you're seeking strategic guidance, operational
support, or expert insights into practice management.
Bernard Genge
Director of Education
I have been in healthcare all my working life from joining the Royal Navy as a young medic in 1977 to leaving my last employed work in 2001 to work freelance in L&D providing corporate training and development programmes in areas such as: Leadership, Management Development,Interpersonal Skills including communication, team building, team leadership motivation, etc.
In 2007, to coincide with the publication of Bernard’s book 10 Actions to Transform Your Life set up a not-for-private-profit social enterprise training & development company ProAction Development with a business partner. The business was set up as a not-for-private profit social enterprise registered as a community interest company so it could fulfil the director’s social aspirations helping the homeless, ex-servicemen, the unemployed and those with mental health issues, but this can only happen by being successful in its core work providing quality training & development to the corporate world in the UK and Europe and the public sector here in the UK.
ProAction Development became an ILM centre and Bernard has delivered ILM level 3 leadership & management courses for the NHS and private sector and has designed and delivered an ILM Level 3 in coaching for NHS Trust in the South West. Their ILM accredited courses achieved over a 95% success rate.
In 2020 during the pandemic I decided to go back to freelance work: Delivering face-to-face and online master-classes on the subject of personal resilience. Setting up, driving and delivering successful organisational improvement projects that are structured and engage the workforce behind change and developing a continuous improvement philosophy.
Learning and development projects – analysing, designing, delivering and measuring the impact of impactful and motivational programmes. Experienced with workshop based learning, blended learning, online webinars and master-classes.
Mentoring/coaching key staff to think differently, strive for excellence, focus on results and achieve ‘world-class’ performance.
Since working freelance most of Bernard’s work has been: delivering training to doctors via Health Education England on personal resilience, the relationship between emotional wellbeing and physical/psychological health and organisational improvement techniques; during the pandemic helping NHS staff build their personal resilience and managers conduct effective trauma debriefing sessions with their staff.
In 2024 joined LPM to design and deliver an impactful L&D plan.
Once registered as self employed you will be able to offset this cost against all incoming including your Practice Manager Salary. Effectively saving you 20% or 40% depending upon your tax band.
